Ree Morton was born in Ossining, NY in 1936. She married in her early twenties and until the 1960s was a devoted navy wife, mother, and nurse. After realizing her artistic calling, she received a BFA at University of Rhode Island in 1968 and a MFA from the Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia in 1970. Morton has exhibited at Artists Space, New York and Institute of Contemporary Art, Philadelphia. In 1980, Allan Schwartzman, along with Kathleen Thomas, organized an exhibition of her work for the New Museum of Contemporary Art, New York, which then traveled to the Contemporary Arts Museum, Houston; University of Colorado Museum, Boulder; Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Buffalo, NY; and Renaissance Society at the University of Chicago. She was teaching at Art Institute of Chicago at the time of her death at the age of 40.
