Well Cultivated Gardens was curated by Ellen Handy and originally exhibited at the Procter Arts Center at Bard College. The title refers to Voltaire’s remark in Candide that we must cultivate our own gardens in a philosophical sense; this title is particularly relevant to the exhibition in regard to both the state of abstraction in contemporary art, as well as the role of women in the art world. Featured in the exhibition are abstract paintings by seven female artists. A concurrent show featuring work by the same artists will be on display at P.S. 122 Gallery.
