Artscool 2007: M.S. 131 Seventh-grade ELL

Edwin Gonzales Ojeda, Tara Mateik, M.S. 131

Participating teaching artists and classroom teachers collaboratively create lesson plans that enrich curriculum and integrate the concepts and techniques of exhibiting artists at Art in General. Teaching artist Edwin Gonzalez worked with Nicoleta Moulinos and her eighth-grade class of English Language Learners. Gonzalez and Moulinos considered the question, “How does art help us learn more English?” and created a sequence of lessons that taught drawing skills, vocabulary, grammar, and writing skills geared toward producing their final class project—a comic book based on a personal memoir of each student. Topics range from the chronicles of a mischief-making canine and firecracker shenanigans to autobiographical travelogues from Coney Island and China.
