096bexg697_4_lg_144_144The site-specific works featured in Scratching the Surface incorporate the gallery walls as an integral part of the art making process. The exhibition includes wall drawings and assemblages that challenge the notion that a wall is simply a background for a work of art. Whether poking nearly invisible holes in the wall to spell out “I Killed Jesus” as in the work of Mindy Yan Miller, or by drawing little figures on the walls throughout the gallery like Theresa Chong, the artists in this show embrace the gallery space as a critical component to their work.
