Strange Kind of Temple

Tijuana-based artist Jaime Ruiz Otis creates minimal installations and sculptures that address economical and cultural concerns regarding the Mexico-United States border. For this installation, Ruiz Otis recycled gold foil from large factories in northern Mexico called Maquiladoras, which he used to cover the walls of Art in General. Elegant and understated, his installations provide a subtle yet powerful political commentary.

Jaime Ruiz-Otis’s exhibition is organized by Art in General and is part of Mexico Now, a citywide festival of contemporary Mexican arts and culture, which presents the work of over 100 Mexican filmmakers, architects, writers, dance, theater, music, and visual artists at 28 of New York City’s leading arts venues in November 2004. Mexico Now is a project of Arts International, the nation’s only nonprofit organization solely devoted to international arts exchange. More information is available at Mexico Now.
