Ganohonyohk

Ganohonyohk is the traditional Thanksgiving address of the Hodenosaunee, the Six Nations of the Iroquois Confederacy. For his residency, Alan Michelson has created an installation based on the principles of the address, which recounts the reciprocal relationship between human beings and the universe. Over 300 traditional Iroquois corn husk dolls are suspended from the ceiling. The dolls were fashioned from leaves of the sacred corn plant, using husks from the Six Nations Reserve in Ontario as well as from former Native American homelands in upstate New York. This installation reflects upon Michelson’s own heritage and notions of displacement.
