The Manhattan Project

For the last five years, Rubén Ortiz Torres has been working with hydraulic mechanics and other techniques generally associated with car culture to transform objects, such as cars and leaf-blower machines, into sculptures. During his residency at Art in General, Ortiz Torres is experimenting with 3D design software to create “flexible” sculptures. Ortiz Torres has created a number of projects, four of which will be on display: a video of a graffiti mural digitally altered into a three-dimensional animation, an actual sculpture modeled after this graffiti image, an on-line project using live-feed from an existing web cam located on Bowery and Canal that will render a “flexible” monument on the plaza of the Manhattan Bridge, and a still video of New York City’s skyline, in which the Empire State Building and Disneyland’s Mount Matterhorn are the local peaks. This residency marks Ortiz Torres’ first solo exhibition in New York City.
