Window Dressed in Pieced Fortunes

Ann Chamberlain

019wi93_4_lg_144_144Created by Ann Chamberlain, this installation presents three garments crafted out of translucent fabric and fortunes from Chinese fortune cookies. This piece was devised specifically with Art in General’s Chinatown location in mind. According to Chamberlain, “The window will be dressed in a garment which reveals the activity within the buildings of Walker Street, the site of a thriving garment industry. Hundreds of immigrants, particularly from Asia have come to work in New York City, piecing together their fortunes in the garment trade.” Chamberlain describes the garments as, “a coat of wishes and desires, one which wraps us in our illusions, yet leaves us vulnerable to the gaze of others.”
