Perceptions

Perceptions features manipulated Polaroid photographs that have been transformed by Japanese-born artist Eiko Kijima into dream-like compositions on paper. Applying the technique of Polaroid Emulsion Transfer, she peels the photographic emulsion from their original supports, and then transfers them to other surfaces, such as acetate, fabric, or wood. While the images dry, Kijima further alters each photograph by manipulating and distorting the emulsion. The resulting imagery evokes the fragile ephemerality of the physical world. Kijima has noted, “I am not so much interested in the “individual” images as content but in creating a freer, more abstract form that goes beyond photography, painting or drawing. As installations, the grouping of these images causes us to question our very way of seeing and frees us to view reality in new ways. “
