Dreamland Burns, a Memorial Retrospective

This memorial exhibition features the work of Brian Damage (1954-1989) and was organized by Carl George, Mark Fisher, Mary Minieka, Edgar Oliver, and Scott Wald. Damage, who died after a 10-year struggle with AIDS, created an eclectic and prodigious body of work during his lifetime. The title piece, Dreamland Burns, is a 36-foot long, mixed-media architectural rendering of turn of the century Coney Island and the Piazza San Marco in Venice. Also included are a series of original ink drawings titled, The Curse of Umbra, that use hieroglyphics and Egyptian iconography to depict the mutations of the RNA retrovirus. The wide range of media in which Damage worked is represented by the inclusion of a number of his costume and toy designs.
