Shooting Back: Photography By and About the Homeless

Mark Peterson, Liliana Nieto del Rio, Jim Hubbard, Jim Goldberg

040exg691_4_lg_144_144Shooting Back features photography taken by homeless children living in shelters in the Washington D.C. area. The photographs are the result of weekly workshops held over a period of eighteen months in which the children worked with professional photographers. Additional photography by Mark Peterson, Liliana Nieto del Rio, Jim Hubbard, and Jim Goldberg will also be on display. The title, Shooting Back, is derived from one homeless boy’s comment that his participation in the project was his way of “shooting back” by responding to the world in his own personal way. A catalogue accompanies the exhibition and includes text by renowned poet Carolyn Forche and E. Ethelbert Miller.
