Among Good Christian People
Jocelyn Taylor, Jacqueline Woodson, Catherine Saalfield
Based on Jacqueline Woodson’s essay, “Growing up Black and Gay Among Christian Peoples,” this exhibition explores the dogmatic views of the Christian church regarding homosexuality. For the exhibition the gallery was turned into a simulation of a Kingdom Hall, the house of worship for Jehovah’s Witnesses, and the walls were inscribed with scripture denouncing homosexuality. A 25-minute video exploring the theme is on view, as are a series of photographs depicting members of the organization, Lavender Light: Black and People of All Colors Gay and Lesbian Gospel Choir, which was created to support homosexual members that wanted to participate in Black Gospel Music Choirs.
